Our Bag of Nails was introduced in 1993 to give all aspiring benders a graduated and standardized way to go from the level of a beginner to world class. Prior to that, classic short benders faced the problem that while bending a 60-penny nail was the standard mark of noteworthy achievement, not all 60-penny nails are created equal and there was not a neat, orderly way to progress up to a 60-penny nail and beyond.
We solved these problems by foregoing actual nails and selecting, instead, steel bar--so that we could control the chemistry and mechanical properties of the steel, along with the dimensions. Thus, while a "60-penny" nail only tells you its dimensions (6 inches by 1/4 inch), the steel can vary all over the board, giving rise to a wide range of difficulty.
Our Bag of Nails kit includes 103 pieces of uniform, graduated "nails" (steel bar) up to and beyond the equivalent of a medium-tough 60-penny nail, as follows: 25 each of Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4, and 3 of the fearsome Red Nails; and a pair of official IronMind bending pads, along with instructions for bending; and everything is packed up in our proven companion, the Tough-As-Nails Small Gear Bag, so you can hit the road looking good and fully loaded for bear. Bend away and don't forget to give a nod to John Brookfield, who set the benchmark for all those who have made short steel bending an act of passion
